Analysers: Myths Vs Reality – Myth #1

It is a myth that SF6 analysers don’t need servicing, just calibration. The reality is that analysers are complex instruments with parts that require servicing and replacing:

  • Dry insulating gases dry out O-rings and seals which eventually crack and allow ambient air into the analyser effecting readings
  • Hoses and fittings need pressure testing (burst risk) and leak checking regularly as these are high impact items and are the main source of inaccurate readings due to leakage
  • Internal fittings, regulators, pressure sensors all need checking and verifying they are leak free and working correctly
  • Compressors for pump back require service and maintenance to ensure they are leak free and can work effectively
  • Electrical safety checks in many countries are legally required to prevent injury from damaged power cables
  • Legislation changes as does software, analysers may need updates to maintain best practice or resolve bugs
  • Some calibrations are not performed to traceable standards as they are completed by local agents or subcontractors who do not specialize in calibration

The EMT Way:

  • All analysers when returned to our service centres in Orlando (USA) or Bedford (UK) undergo a 95 point assessment

  • All essential O-rings and seals are replaced. Internal pressure sensors are calibrated (essential for dewpoint calculation) and internal piping checked

  • Client hoses and fittings are both pressure checked (burst risk) and leak checked

  • Compressors are serviced and gaskets assessed and changed if required

  • All external and internal power systems are checked and secured

  • All analysers are updated to the latest software and legislation changes on every service

  • Always ensure your calibration is covered by ISO9001 standards as a minimum – Ask for the cert!
